Man fighting for his life after brawl erupts in Hong Kong tourist hotspot of Cheung Chau

A 56-year-old Hong Kong man was fighting for his life on Sunday following a public brawl that erupted in the tourist hotspot of Cheung Chau, resulting in the detention of seven people at the scene.

The incident occurred on Saturday at around 10pm on Cheung Chau Church Road, where police received reports of a street fight involving numerous individuals.

Upon arrival, police intercepted seven men aged between 18 and 37 at the public pier and detained them fighting in a public place.

The man sustained severe head injuries and was found unconscious at the scene. He was airlifted to Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital in Chai Wan where he remained in critical condition as of Sunday evening.

A video circulating online captured the chaos, showing more than 20 people shouting. Two groups were initially pushing and shoving each other before the stand-off escalated into a full-blown fight, with participants using their fists, kicking and throwing bicycles and other objects.

The video shows several individuals were injured, and photos posted online also showed blood on the ground.
