Super Typhoon Man-yi: Hong Kong Observatory to issue T1 signal as early as 6am on Monday
Forecaster says possibility of higher signal being issued will depend on distance between Man-yi and Pearl River Delta, among other factors
The Hong Kong Observatory will issue the No 1 signal on Monday morning as Super Typhoon Man-yi edges closer, while warning that the weather is expected to remain windy and temperatures will fall to 18 degrees Celsius (64.4 Fahrenheit) or below later this week.
“Tropical Cyclone Man-yi will enter within 800km [497 miles] of Hong Kong around midnight … The Observatory will issue the standby signal No 1 between 6am and 9am on [Monday],” the forecaster said.
The warning is issued when a tropical cyclone is centred 800km away from Hong Kong and likely to affect the city.
The Observatory said that while Man-Yi was expected to gradually weaken, it would be windy over the coast of Guangdong province on Tuesday as the storm approached under the combined effects of a northeast monsoon.
“Whether a higher tropical cyclone warning signal will be issued between Monday night to early Tuesday will depend on the distance between Man-yi and the Pearl River Estuary, its change in intensity and the change in local wind conditions,” it said.
The forecaster earlier said it expected the storm to ease from a super typhoon to a typhoon on Monday before becoming a severe tropical storm by the next day, when it was centred about 400km from the city.
Man-yi would then become a tropical depression on Wednesday as it moved away from Hong Kong, it added.
