Philippines to deport Hong Kong man, mainland Chinese woman wanted in 59 million yuan case
Hongkonger Hui Chi-lam, 55, allegedly sold financial products to investors without having required qualifications and government permits
Philippine immigration officials have arrested and will deport a Hong Kong man and an alleged accomplice who are wanted in mainland China in connection with a 59 million yuan (US$8.3 million) financial crime.
Hongkonger Hui Chi-lam, 55, allegedly sold financial products to investors without having the required qualifications and government permits since 2018 and was placed on mainland authorities’ wanted list in mid-March.
Hui and Su Yan, a 47-year-old Chinese national also on the wanted list, were arrested at their residence in Manila during an operation on October 31, the Bureau of Immigration said.
Philippines authorities said the immigration chief had issued an order at the request of the Chinese government, which had sought help in finding and deporting the two fugitives.
The pair, who were on tourist visas, also violated local immigration laws by overstaying in the country, the bureau said on Monday.
They were being held at a bureau detention facility in Taguig City, in southeastern Metro Manila, pending proceedings.
