An inmate with a triad background is suspected to have organised the gang attack on a correctional services officer outside a Hong Kong prison on Friday because he was upset with the victim, the Post has learned.
A source said on Saturday the inmate at Pik Uk Prison in Sai Kung was a member of the Sun Yee On triad gang and his dissatisfaction with the officer prompted him to arrange for his associates to launch the assault.
Lam Kai-chor, superintendent of police for the force’s organised crime and triad bureau, said eight people had been arrested over the attack, and the suspects all had a triad background.
He said the force would continue to hunt for any others responsible for the case.
“Police strongly condemn the violent behaviour towards public service workers and the lawless actions of individual criminals,” Lam said.
“I want to state again that combating triads is one of the primary operation focuses of the police commissioner. Police will continue to take action to combat the triads and their related income streams.”
Three men attacked the 50-year-old Correctional Services Department assistant officer as he left Pik Uk Prison.
Speaking to the media on Saturday, Lam said one of the suspects acted as a leader during the attack and the other seven were his associates.
The senior police officer said the victim suffered six wounds to his head and arms, as well as a broken bone in his right wrist.
An insider said the two wounds to his head measured 10cm (four inches) and 6cm.
He added that the three men attacked the prison officer with “stick-like hard objects”, and not knives as previously reported by authorities. The force said the victim remained in a stable condition.
Officers are still investigating what their roles were during the incident, with police also noting there was no evidence that the attack was related to the victim’s financial situation or personal life.
“Whether this was related to the victim’s work is one of the investigation directions of the police,” Lam said, noting that the force was also looking into whether the suspects knew the victim.
The force also revealed that the perpetrators injured a mother and daughter when they collided with them during their escape, and the pair was discharged from hospital after treatment.
Lam noted that the force’s efforts to hunt for those responsible was still in progress, but did not reveal how many more people were expected to be arrested.
The Correctional Services Department said on Friday it was deeply concerned about the case.
“The department is deeply concerned about the incident and strongly condemns the perpetrators’ lawless behaviour,” it said.
Department staff were also providing help to the officer and his family.
Former security chief Lai Tung-kwok, now a lawmaker, said that while the force was still investigating whether the victim was attacked due to his work, he believed that the case was an isolated incident and authorities would not have to step up protection for prison staff outside of their workplace.
“For incidents that affect prison officers that have gotten off work, I think the best and most effective method would be to send everyone a clear message that if you use force to attack someone, this is something that is not allowed under the law, we will catch you and we will do so very quickly,” he said.
The lawmaker noted that it was already a serious matter if a civilian was attacked and injured, and it was “absolutely unacceptable” for a public sector worker to be assaulted due to the person’s work.
