Fire at Hong Kong cargo area put out after burning for 14 hours
Huge plumes of smoke from Yau Ma Tei site draw attention of onlookers on both sides of Victoria Harbour; no casualties reported
A fire which burned at a Hong Kong public cargo working area for 14 hours has finally been put out after destroying recycled material and sending huge plumes of thick smoke into the sky.
Authorities said the blaze, which broke out in Yau Ma Tei at 5.06pm on Monday and caught the attention of onlookers on both sides of Victoria Harbour, was largely extinguished at 7.17am on Tuesday.
The Fire Services Department upgraded the fire’s level of seriousness at 6pm on Monday, while the flame was brought under control at 3.11am the following day.
The fire, covering an area of 400 square metres in New Yau Ma Tei Public Cargo Working Area, involved around 10 containers at the cargo space on Hoi Fai Road.
The recycled material included metal, wood and plastic.
No casualties were reported and no evacuation was needed.
