Hong Kong court remands teaching assistant in custody after guilty plea for DSE exam leak
Court hears Lau Kwun-hei leaked questions from university entrance exam’s English test on Xiaohongshu, breaching confidentiality terms
A Hong Kong court has remanded in custody a teaching assistant who admitted to leaking university entrance exam questions on a mainland Chinese social media platform to help “pave the way” for the launch of her private tuition business.
Lau Kwun-hei pled guilty to one count of breach of secrecy when she appeared at Eastern Court on Wednesday.
The court heard that the 23-year-old had been an invigilator for the Diploma of Secondary Education’s English listening assessment that took place on April 13.
Invigilators are required to sign a confidentiality agreement with the Hong Kong Examinations and Assessment Authority and are only allowed to keep answer books for teaching purposes, as long as they do not publicise them.
Under the username “Miss Lucy”, Lau posted two pages from the exam’s question and answer book on the popular Instagram-like Xiaohongshu platform after the assessment. A caption asked users: “Which question did you choose?”
The authority on April 16 filed a report with police after the post started circulating on other social media platforms.
The defendant admitted to officers that she shared the questions to “pave the way for starting an online tuition business”.
