One of the two dogs that went missing at Hong Kong’s Po Lin Monastery was found safe on Wednesday, a month after two people were arrested in connection with the animals’ disappearance.

Two kitchen workers at the Buddhist monastery allegedly wrapped plastic bags around the heads of the two dogs, named Dai Mui and Sai Mui – or “big sister” and “little sister” in Chinese – before abandoning them on a hillside.

The workers were later arrested by police on suspicion of animal cruelty and suspended from their jobs.

A source familiar with the investigation earlier said a woman supervisor of the monastery’s kitchen had been bitten by one of the dogs, leading to the decision to remove the pair from the monastery.

Volunteers conducted multiple searches for the missing dogs, both female brown-and-black mongrels.

Kent Luk Ka-jeep, founder of animal welfare organisation Paws Guardian Rescue Shelter, and actress-turned-lawyer Mary Jean Reimer, each offered HK$100,000 (US$12,800) rewards for information on the dogs’ whereabouts.
