Hong Kong police arrest van driver who hit woman, leaving her in critical condition

Hong Kong police have arrested the driver of a delivery van after it knocked down a 53-year-old woman at a road junction in Mong Kok on Thursday, leaving her in a life-threatening condition in hospital.

The vehicle, driven by a 59-year-old man, struck the pedestrian when it turned onto Shantung Street from Nathan Road at around 10.11am, according to the force.

A police spokesman said the woman was injured in the head and was in a semi-conscious state while being carried into an ambulance.

“Subsequently, she lost consciousness in Queen Elizabeth Hospital [in Yau Ma Tei],” he said.

As of Thursday afternoon, the woman remained in a critical condition in hospital, a government spokeswoman said.
