A source said the man was on a boat trip off Sai Kung with a group of friends and went swimming with two other people at Ung Kong Wan on Bluff Island, at about 11am.

“The man’s friends had boarded the boat first, while he kept swimming,” the source added. “Later on, the person who reported the incident heard the man shout for help.”

The individual called police at about 11.40am and rescuers brought the man to shore and he was flown by helicopter to Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital in Chai Wan. But he was pronounced dead by doctors about an hour after arrival.

The Government Flying Service said 2 per cent of the 281 call-outs until July 28 this year were for drowning cases.
