Hongkonger arrested after man dies in suspected drink spiking

  • Victim, suspect were having sex party with another man at the time, insider reveals

A Hongkonger has been arrested on suspicion of administering drugs to obtain or facilitate an unlawful sexual act following the death of a 49-year-old accountant who allegedly consumed a spiked drink.

Initial investigations suggested the victim consumed a drug-laced energy drink before the suspect, 54, had sex with him in a public housing flat in Hung Hom, the Post learned on Thursday.

A source familiar with the case said the pair started a sex party on the premises as early as 9pm on Monday and a businessman, 51, was later invited to attend.

The insider said it was a “chem fun”, or chemical fun, party, where same-sex individuals took drugs to heighten the experience. He said the three men had known each other for about two years and occasionally held the party in the flat, occupied by the 54-year-old.

Emergency personnel were called to the flat in Hung Hom Estate on Dyer Avenue after receiving a report that the 49-year-old had collapsed at around 10am on Tuesday.

The unconscious victim was rushed to Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Yau Ma Tei, where he was pronounced dead, according to the force.

Police said a small quantity of what appeared to be crystal meth, also known as Ice, was found inside the flat during investigations.

“Preliminary investigations suggested the victim consumed a drink suspected to contain an illicit drug,” police said.

On the same day, officers arrested the other two men in the same district.

The older suspect was detained on suspicion of administering drugs to obtain or facilitate an unlawful sex act, trafficking in a dangerous drug and consumption of a narcotic. The other was apprehended on suspicion of drug consumption.

The two suspects were still being held for questioning as of Thursday afternoon.

Another source said an autopsy would be carried out to determine whether the cause of death was due to a drug overdose or if the deceased had a medical condition.

Detectives from the Kowloon City district crime squad are investigating.

In Hong Kong, administering drugs to obtain or facilitate an unlawful sexual act is punishable by up to 14 years in prison.
