Two British judges have resigned from Hong Kong’s top court, with one attributing his departure to the city’s “political situation”, dropping a political bombshell that has sent shock waves through legal circles.

In a reply to the Post, Lawrence Collins confirmed he had resigned as a non-permanent judge of the Court of Final Appeal.

“I have resigned … because of the political situation in Hong Kong, but I continue to have the fullest confidence in the court and the total independence of its members,” he said on Thursday.

The other judge, Jonathan Sumption, told the Post he would make a statement next week regarding his resignation.
