Assault charges dropped but Hong Kong’s Amina Bokhary jailed for six weeks despite claim she was only driving ‘to buy congee for ailing family’
- Niece of top city judge jailed for six weeks and disqualified from driving for 18 months
- Defence lawyer says offence was a one-off error of judgment made after the congee shop repeatedly hung up on her
A Hong Kong woman whose family name and past scrapes with police have brought citywide notoriety was jailed again on Monday after she admitted driving illegally but claimed it was only to buy congee for her ailing parents.
Bohkary, whose uncle Ronald Arculli is a former Executive Council member, pleaded guilty on Monday to one count each of driving while disqualified and using a vehicle without third-party insurance.
Defence lawyer Christopher Morley said his client’s offence was a one-off error of judgment made after the congee shop repeatedly hung up on her.
“Amina was concerned about her mother not eating,” Morley said. “The decision to drive was ultimately born out of a desire to get food for her parents. She herself was sick. It was an act of kindness – she wanted to get everyone fed.”
