A British banker serving a life sentence in Hong Kong for murdering two Indonesian women was sued by his victims’ families on Wednesday for unspecified damages.
The legal action came after the Post revealed last month that Rurik Jutting, 32, has appealed against his conviction, despite pledging to respect the verdict and accept the life sentence that he described as “just and appropriate”.
Last November, a nine-person jury unanimously found the Briton guilty of murdering Sumarti Ningsih, 23, and Seneng Mujiasih, 26, in October 2014.
The court heard he tortured the women before slitting their throats in his Wan Chai flat.

The brutal killings left the women’s families in Indonesia – who relied on cash that the women sent home – struggling with emotional turmoil and financial uncertainty.
Speaking of Sumarti, her mother Suratmi told the Post earlier: “I’ll always miss her. But where can I find her now?”


In two separate personal injuries claims filed at the High Court in Hong Kong, Sumarti’s mother and Seneng’s father, Muji Harjo, have demanded damages and loss for personal injuries arising from the death of the deceased as a result of murder, along with interest and costs, from Jutting.

Solicitors for Suratmi and Muji Harjo did not disclose how much they were seeking.
An initial hearing has been scheduled for April 23 next year, after Jutting’s appeal is heard on December 12.


Jutting is serving a life sentence at the maximum-security Stanley Prison, on the south of Hong Kong Island.
