Kai Tak terminal tender gives new operator time to prepare: Hong Kong minister
Tourism secretary Rosanna Law says opening tenders in 2027 will be too late for a contract that expires in 2028
A new tendering exercise for the management of the Kai Tak Cruise Terminal in 2025, three years before the current agreement expires, will give the next operator sufficient time to plan, Hong Kong’s tourism minister has said, as the incumbent firm defended its performance.
“We hope to attract more cruises to Hong Kong. It’s important to have them here both as a home port or a port within a longer route. It will be too late to tender in 2027 for a contract that runs out in 2028,” Law told a radio show on Tuesday.
“The new operator will need to prepare as work starts before 2028. At the same time, the timetables for cruise companies to dock and the deployment of vessels take two to three years to plan.”
The Kai Tak facility has been managed by Worldwide Cruise Terminals since the government granted it a 10-year contract in 2012. The contract was extended in 2022 to May 2028.
