Hong Kong’s John Lee meets visiting officials from 12 countries to promote city’s business advantages

Government says leader promoted city’s market-oriented advantages and business-friendly environment in meeting with ambassadors and other officials

Hong Kong leader John Lee Ka-chiu met visiting ambassadors to China and senior officials from 12 countries on Monday to promote the city’s market-oriented advantages and business-friendly environment.

The government said in a release that Lee met a visiting delegation of “high-profile government officials from 12 countries across Africa, the Americas, Asia, Europe, the Middle East and Oceania” to enhance exchanges and cooperation.

In a later reply to the Post, a government spokesman said they were ambassadors to China and senior officials of a number of foreign ministries responsible for bilateral relations and economic cooperation. They hailed from Zambia, Croatia, Romania, Chile, Fiji, Jordan, Mexico, Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania, Papua New Guinea and Malaysia.

The visiting officials also met representatives from the Financial Services and the Treasury Bureau, the Monetary Authority and stock exchange to hear briefings about the latest developments of the city’s financial services industry.

The government said Lee met the delegation on Monday to exchange views on deepening cooperation.

“As the world’s freest economy, Hong Kong boasts a highly internationalised, market-oriented and friendly business environment, making it an ideal place for companies to expand their global operations,” a government spokesman said.

“[Lee] welcomed businesses worldwide to use Hong Kong as a platform to explore overseas and mainland markets, achieving mutual benefits.”
