Explainer | As Coldplay’s return to Hong Kong sparks joy, the Post looks at past visits by global stars

British rock band Coldplay is among the first musical acts lined up to play at the soon-to-open mega stadium in Hong Kong’s Kai Tak Sports Park, with ticket sales expected to launch around the start of 2025.
Sources earlier told the Post the band behind hits such as “Fix You”, “Yellow” and “Viva La Vida” will perform early next year at the site’s main stadium, which boasts 50,000 seats and can operate at a maximum capacity of 65,000 people.
The Post digs through the archives to look at past visits from international acts that rocked the city.
1. Why is the news a big deal for Hong Kong?
Coldplay’s concert next year will be the first time it has performed in Hong Kong since 2009, with the band snubbing the city when it announced an Asia tour in 2023.
The tour included performances in Singapore, Japan, Taiwan, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines and Thailand between last November and February of this year.
The band, fronted by vocalist Chris Martin, are not the only ones to have skipped Hong Kong recently, joining several global stars who started touring the continent again after the Covid-19 pandemic.
American singer Taylor Swift performed multiple shows in Japan and Singapore as part of her world tour in February and March.
