An ongoing “negative discourse” about Hong Kong will not work at undermining the city’s role as a global financial hub, Turkey’s top local envoy has said.

In an exclusive interview with the Post, Consul General Kerim Sercan Evcin said that Hong Kong would remain an important centre of finance as global economic growth shifted to the Asia-Pacific region.

“Unfortunately, there is a global public opinion trend to have negative discourse about Hong Kong, which is not the reality in Hong Kong,” Evcin said.

“I believe the 21st century will be the Asian century. If this region will be the [engine of] global economic growth … it is not possible to undermine the importance of Hong Kong.”

“Even if you try to … push Hong Kong out of the picture, this is something impossible because Hong Kong is unique.”

The city has been caught in the crossfire between China and the West in recent years, especially following Beijing’s imposition of the national security law in 2020.
