Thousands return home to Hong Kong after enjoying good deals in ‘no-brainer’ Shenzhen over National Day long break

Thousands of Hongkongers have streamed through border crossings from mainland China and returned to the city on the last day of the long weekend, after enjoying good deals on food and self-pampering options in neighbouring Shenzhen.
A Post reporter was among about 1,000 travellers at the Futian checkpoint in Shenzhen who crossed the border into Hong Kong via the Lok Ma Chau spur line around noon on Monday.
The crossing was packed with travellers on the last day of the break covering the Mid-Autumn Festival and National Day but customs clearance took only about 15 minutes including the mandatory health declaration.
Homemaker Elaine Tsang So-kwan, 52, spent three nights in Shenzhen with her husband on a short break and forked out about HK$6,000 (US$769) on accommodation, food and massages.
“We thought about going to Taiwan but it seemed a bit rushed just going there for four days. Shenzhen is a no-brainer for a short break where you don’t need to plan a thing to just relax and lie flat,” Tsang said.
