Hong Kong announced on Friday two sets of relief schemes to help ease the heavy economic burden on the city’s workforce caused by stringent social-distancing measures amid a fifth wave of coronavirus infections.

The Employment Support Scheme (ESS) will be relaunched so that the government can hand out wage subsidies to affected small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).

The government will also directly provide subsidies through the Temporary Unemployment Relief scheme to those who have lost their jobs or have had to temporarily stop working due to social-distancing measures.

Hong Kong’s unemployment rate in February hit a five-month high of 4.5 per cent, with 157,900 people jobless.
