More than 100 Hong Kong residents reported feeling mild tremors after a magnitude 6.4 earthquake struck Taiwan shortly after midnight on Tuesday.
The Observatory said the quake hit at 12.17am at a depth of around 10km (6 miles), with the epicentre located south-southeast of Chiayi and about 670km east of Hong Kong.
The weather forecaster added it had received more than 100 reports from residents of minor shaking that lasted several seconds.
The Observatory classified the shaking in Hong Kong as a local intensity of three on the Modified Mercalli Intensity Scale. This indicates that the tremors could be felt indoors, resembling vibrations caused by passing light trucks.
Taiwan’s weather authorities said a magnitude 6.4 earthquake had struck the self-ruled island. Hong Kong’s weather forecaster measured the earthquake at magnitude 6.
No deaths have been reported so far as rescuers are still assessing the damage.
