A cold weather warning was issued by the Hong Kong Observatory at 4.20pm on Saturday, forecasting temperatures ranging from 13 to 20 degrees.

Saturday marked the winter solstice, the longest night of the year in the northern hemisphere. In the Chinese lunar calendar, the occasion usually marks the “extreme of winter” and the beginning of longer days to come.

On Sunday, the maximum temperature will be 18 degrees, while the mercury is forecast to rise slightly over the course of the week.

“An area of low pressure is expected to affect the southern part of the South China Sea. The associated band of clouds will cover the South China Sea and the coast of Guangdong early to midweek next week,” it said.

“Another surge of the northeast monsoon will affect southern China in the latter part of next week,” it added.
