Hong Kong’s third medical school to work closely with Northern Metropolis partners
Task group unveils framework for proposals to set up school, as health minister stresses need for ‘quality and quantity’ of medical professionals
The government’s task group on the third medical school convened for its second meeting on Thursday and listed out 10 key parameters for considering bids from universities applying to launch the institution.
Secretary for Health Lo Chung-mau, a co-chair of the group, said the school must target both quality and quantity of medical professionals.
“The task group considered that the new medical school should shoulder the mission of nurturing more talented doctors for practice in Hong Kong, thereby supporting the local healthcare system with a view to enhancing both the quality and quantity of healthcare services,” Lo said.
Key parameters also included planning for a teaching hospital, offering a graduate-entry programme and adopting an accredited medical curriculum framework.
The task group will issue a letter of invitation on Monday next week to all eight universities funded by the University Grants Committee. Those interested in running the new medical school must submit their proposals by March 17 next year.
