Elderly Hongkongers urged to prepare for winter as cold front set to hit
‘Temperatures will fall progressively over coast of Guangdong in next couple of days, and weather will become fine and dry,’ Observatory says
Elderly Hong Kong residents have been urged to prepare for chilly weather as a cold front is expected to move across the coast of Guangdong province very late on Monday night, with temperatures likely to fall gradually over the coming days.
The forecaster said an associated “intense” northeast monsoon would bring a few showers over Guangdong, adding that winds in the city would strengthen and morning temperatures would fall to as low as 14 degrees Celsius (57.2 Fahrenheit) from Tuesday.
“A cold front will move across the coast of Guangdong around midnight,” the forecaster said on Monday.
“Under the persistent influence of the associated intense northeast monsoon and its replenishment, temperatures will fall progressively over the coast of Guangdong in the next couple of days, and the weather will become fine and dry.”
It reminded residents that the temperature difference between day and night would be significant for inland areas.
The Observatory and the Senior Citizen Home Safety Association also issued a joint reminder for elderly residents to prepare for the coming dip in temperatures.
Maura Wong Hung-hung, the association’s CEO, said elderly people were particularly susceptible to drops in winter temperatures, which could trigger common health problems such as cardiovascular disease, hypothermia and respiratory issues.
