Hong Kong breaks record with late-year ‘very hot weather’ warning
Observatory issues very hot weather warning as temperatures reach up to 33.6 degrees on Saturday
Hong Kong’s forecaster issued a late-year “very hot weather” warning on Saturday, breaking the previous record, as the mercury soared to as high as 33.6 degrees Celsius (92.48 Fahrenheit).
The record was last broken seven years ago when the city logged a maximum temperature of 32.7 degrees as late in the year as October 12.
The city typically cools down towards December, but a spate of high-heat days have been logged around this time of year since 2021.
In October of last year, Hong Kong recorded three very hot days – where the daily maximum temperature hit 33 degrees or above – compared with two in 2022 and only one in 2021.
The forecaster on Saturday also reminded the public to take precautions against heatstroke.
The Observatory said a strong easterly airstream would affect the coast of Guangdong province in the next couple of days, with a dry northeast monsoon expecting to reach southern China on Tuesday.
