Heavy showers hit Hong Kong’s Lantau and New Territories; amber rainstorm signal dropped

  • Observatory says more than 40mm of rainfall recorded in some areas and showers expected to linger for the rest of the day

Bands of intense thundery showers have badly affected areas of Hong Kong’s Lantau Island and the New Territories, with the city’s weather forecaster at one point issuing an amber rainstorm warning.

A number of areas in the eastern New Territories and Kwai Tsing district had recorded more than 40mm (1.6 inches) of rainfall as of around 10am on Sunday, and the Hong Kong Observatory was earlier evaluating the need to upgrade the signal to a red rainstorm warning.

The amber warning, issued at 7.15am, was cancelled at 12.10pm.

The weather outlook for the Dragon Boat Festival on Monday remained sunny and hot.

The city was under the influence of a trough of low pressure and showers were expected to linger for the rest of the day.

“Members of the public should stay on alert and continue to be aware of the change in weather,” the Observatory said, warning people not to go swimming or engage in water sports outdoors.

Temperatures remained hot at between 26 and 30 degrees Celsius (78.8 and 86 Fahrenheit), with south to southeast winds reaching a force of 3 to 4 and occasional gusts recorded.
