After an unusually hot and long summer, Hongkongers might have to bundle up this weekend as temperatures were expected to plunge to as low as 16 degrees Celsius on Sunday.
The high temperature was projected to drop from 26 degrees on Saturday to 19 degrees on Sunday, while weekend lows would slide from 22 degrees on Friday to 19 degrees on Saturday and to 16 degrees on Sunday, marking the low for the week.
Patches of rain were forecast for Saturday night and Sunday morning.
“A cold front will sweep from inland China across Hong Kong and the southern region on Saturday,” Hong Kong Observatory scientific officer Tsoi Tsz-shun said.
“The associated intense northeast monsoon will prevail and bring cooler weather to the region during the weekend and early next week,” he said.

Early next week the temperatures were expected to range from 16 to 22 degrees.
The cool weather followed an exceptionally long and hot summer, including an unprecedented two hot weather warnings in October when parts of Hong Kong saw thermometers top 32 degrees. The average for October is 25.5 degrees.
September, when “very hot” weather warnings were issued five times, was declared one of the warmest Septembers in the city’s history since records began in the 1880s.




Jacky Lam, owner of Sheung Hei Claypot Rice in Sai Wan, said his business fell by 10 per cent last summer compared with the previous one because of the sweltering heat.
“The colder the weather, the more attractive our dishes are. Our business is centred in the winter” said Lam, whose restaurant was recently featured in a Michelin’s list of Bib Gourmands, which accredits quality moderately priced eateries.
“I expect the business will rise following the cold weather this weekend. The colder, the merrier!”
