Hong Kong photographer scoops top prize in global Nature Conservancy contest
Jessica Li’s spectacular photo shows a woman shining a light near the top of Hong Kong’s highest mountain, Tai Mo Shan
A young Hong Kong woman has scooped a top award in a global photography competition on people and nature by capturing the city’s highest peak, Tai Mo Shan.
Artist Jessica Li Ka-wai, in her 20s, is among 12 winners of various categories who collectively beat more than 32,700 entries from 141 countries and territories in the competition called “What’s Your Nature” organised by non-government organisation, The Nature Conservancy. Li also beat nearly 1,200 entries from Hong Kong.
Li’s award-winning picture titled “This Night, A Dream Has Come True”, shows a woman in a hiking outfit holding a light near the top of Tai Mo Shan as clouds roll in.
“I hope to present Hong Kong’s natural beauty to people around the world,” Li said. “There is world-class nature scenery in this bustling international city and you can find it if you take the time to explore deep enough.”
The group’s Asia-Pacific managing director, Charles Bedford, said Li’s entry was a perfect example of what the competition was intended to do – get people talking about the way they perceive nature and inspire them to preserve it.
“Jessica’s award-winning photo explores the beauty in the relationship between people and nature, and perfectly illustrates the hope that the two can thrive together,” Bedford said.
