Leung also lists out qualities needed by a future leader, although he insists he’s not saying he has them all
Antony Leung Kam-chung, a former financial secretary and a possible contestant in the race to become Hong Kong’s next chief executive, has recommended children read Bible stories because “they teach children moral values and how to think through difficult problems”.
At the annual seven-day Hong Kong Book Fair, which opened on Wednesday, Leung also encouraged secondary school students to read widely outside their subjects.
“Creativity comes from connecting the dots of the knowledge of different subjects,” he said.
When asked about whether he had any plans to run for chief executive next year, Leung said: “The most important things in life aren’t planned by individuals but by God. Currently I still haven’t heard the call from God to run, so I have no plans.”
However, he elaborated on the qualities needed for a future leader.
“The future chief executive should be able to maintain ‘one country, two systems’ and uphold Hong Kong’s core values; have the ability to develop Hong Kong’s economy and improve the livelihood of its residents; and be relatively successful in uniting society,” Leung said, although he added he did not mean to say he had all these qualities.
