Escargot caviar, a HK$120,000 Puer tea cake and a HK$1 game to win HK$7,000 worth of abalone are among key highlights of the annual Hong Kong food expo, starting August 11.
Those with deep pockets can taste the delicate flavour of snail caviar from Malaga, Spain, which makes its debut in the city, and the precious Puer tea cake, made in 1988.
“The almost 30-year-old tea cake has a mixed flavour of plum and grapefruit, with a fragrance of aged tea wood,” said Helen Feng Caixia, director of the tea house offering the Puer tea cake. “Only a tea cake kept for more than 20 years has such flavours.”

The food fair is also split into a Gourmet Zone for those with more expensive tastes, and a Public Hall for the general public to sample new products.
The expo will also feature a 3.5m “wishing tree”, the stage for a competition to take home an impressive load of abalone. The contest accepts the first 10 people to pay a nominal fee of HK$1 each, and involves throwing fake abalone and gift bags onto the tree branches.
“The one who throws the abalone on the highest or a specific branch will bring home 168 abalone worth more than HK$7,000,” Richard Poon Kuen-fai, managing director of On Kee Dry Seafood which organises the contest, said.
Last year’s “abalone mountain contest” involved contestants grabbing as many fake abalones as they can.
Bargain-hunters eyeing more freebies can also take a chance at the durian snowy mooncake booth, which offers the first three visitors - again, paying only HK$1 - the chance to grab cakes in a crystal box. Whoever gets more than 10 cakes in 30 seconds will get a box of durian snowy mooncakes for free not just for this year, but for the following years.
This year’s Food Expo will feature 17 per cent more exhibitors, at 1,400, from 25 countries and regions. Last year, about 20,000 visitors attended the fair.
It will be held at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre in Wan Chai from August 11 to 15. To boost traffic, the food fair will be held during the same period as four other shows including the Home Delights Expo, the Hong Kong International Tea Fair, the Beauty and Wellness Expo and the International Conference of the Modernisation of Chinese Medicine and Health Products.
