The South China Morning Post’s infographics team has scooped top honours at this year’s prestigious WAN-IFRA World Digital Media Awards.

The newspaper bagged gold in the data visualisation category for a comprehensive visual explainer on five major projects featured in China’s Belt and Road Initiative – a foreign trade and development strategy. The graphic looked at railways to London and Iran, Gwadar Port in Pakistan, a Central Asia-China gas pipeline and the Khorgos Gateway, a rail line which connects Kazakhstan to China.

“I really wasn’t expecting this. It is difficult to beat teams from the best newspapers in the world,” said Adolfo Arranz, the Post’s deputy head of infographics and illustration, who shared the award with his colleagues Marcelo Duhalde and Marco Hernandez.

“But you work hard always to try to put out the best product, so really this is a much appreciated prize.”
