Tropical Storm Yinxing to intensify, enter within 800km of Hong Kong on Saturday: forecaster

A tropical storm east of the Philippines is likely to intensify and enter within 800km (497 miles) of Hong Kong on Saturday, the weather forecaster has said.

A path projection for Tropical Storm Yinxing shows it could develop into a typhoon by Wednesday and a severe typhoon by Friday.

The Observatory said Yinxing was then expected to weaken into a typhoon after approaching the city on Saturday. Yinxing means ginkgo seeds in Chinese.

Yinxing was about 1,230km east of Manila as of Monday noon. It is expected to move northwest at about 28km/h (17.4mph) towards the east of the Luzon Strait in the Philippines and intensify gradually.

It is predicted to turn west and enter the central and northern parts of the South China Sea.
