Hong Kong will keep T1 typhoon warning until at least 6am on Saturday as Trami approaches
Severe Tropical Storm Trami estimated to be about 590km southeast of city as of 4pm
The No 1 typhoon warning issued at 1.40am on Friday will remain in force until at least 6am on Saturday, the Hong Kong Observatory has said.
The weather forecaster said Severe Tropical Storm Trami was estimated to be about 590km (367 miles) southeast of Hong Kong as of 4pm and expected to move west at about 22km/h (13.7mph) across the central and northern parts of the South China Sea.
“Under the combined effect of Trami and the northeast monsoon, local winds are occasionally strong offshore and on high ground,” the Observatory said. “The No 1 standby signal will remain in force until at least 6am tomorrow.”
It added that due to the terrain sheltering effect, the wind in general over the city would not strengthen significantly in the morning.
“Depending on the distance of strong winds associated with Trami from the Pearl River Estuary and the change in local wind conditions, the Observatory will assess the need of issuing the strong wind signal No 3 during the day tomorrow,” the forecaster said.
According to the present forecast track, Trami will move gradually towards the vicinity of Hainan Island.
Local winds will weaken later on Sunday. But the forecaster warned there could be uncertainties in its subsequent movement.
