The past year has embodied the tricky reputation of the Chinese zodiac’s Monkey.
It wasn’t just Donald Trump’s unexpected rise to high office that provided uncertainty this year: the Rio Olympics also held surprises for Hong Kong athlete Sarah Lee Wai-sze, who crashed out of a race and staged a fightback.
The Post aimed to provide explanatory interactive graphics to put our readers into the frame when big news happened.
We’ve made a collection of the major stories of the year where interactives were used to explain them. Here’s the top 10.
The Legislative Council election
Hong Kong voters awoke on September 5 to watch as localists were elected to the Legislative Council for the first time. But it wasn’t to be for long. Soon after their unprecedented rise to power, many were under fire for the way they took their oaths. Our interactives aimed to tell the story in real time as the votes were being counted.

Fukushima five years after the tsunami
A massive clean-up operation has led to a tightening of the exclusion zone around evacuated areas left vacant since the Fukushima disaster – a triple meltdown at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant caused by a mix of poor planning and a 9.0 magnitude earthquake in 2011.
To bring readers up to speed, the Post collaborated with artists, scientists and used official reports to tell the story, in vivid graphics, of the five years since the accident, and how the area is slowly recovering.

Sarah Lee Wai-sze crashes out of Rio Olympics semi-final
Hong Kong’s most likely medal contender at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games was champion track cyclist Sarah Lee Wai-sze. But in a keirin semi-final, Lee’s handlebars were nudged by Australian Anna Meares and the Hong Kong hopeful crashed out of the race. Lee was expecting a silver medal but came home empty-handed.

US election
The Post brought the US election to readers as the votes were being counted. In the lead-up to the vote our interactives told the live story of polling that put Hillary Clinton ahead throughout the campaign – and was eventually shown to be missing the vital clues that may have predicted Donald Trump’s win.




Chungking Mansions turns 55, but may not see out another decade.
Hong Kong’s best known ‘no-tell’ motel style of accommodation is Chungking Mansions. The luxury block that fell into disrepute has lived the many lives of a cat, but while it has seemed to land on its feet, its management predicts the end is nigh.




Hong Kong’s own homebuilt plane flies around the world
This was the year Hongkongers joined the high-flying few who have circumnavigated the world in a plane assembled by hand. A collection of high school students and adult engineers built the two-seater RV-8 kit plane named “Inspiration”, which then hopped around the planet flown by Cathay Pacific pilots.

Clockenflap — bigger than ever
Since Hong Kong’s major music festival’s uncertain beginnings, Clockenflap has grown in scope and numbers. Our interactives aimed to highlight how the festival rose to prominence from a single-stage event.

Hong Kong’s new developments
Nearly everyone in town has a hand in the property game somehow, whether as an aspirational newcomer or a shrewd investor. But keeping track of the hundreds of new developments, and tens of thousands of new units set to be built in the next few years is nearly impossible – without help. Here is the Post’s first instalment of the new development tracking map; it aims to show where Hong Kong’s growing population will live in future.

AirBNB challenges established hotels
Disruptive app AirBNB made earning a few bucks from spare rooms simple, and the rise in listings in Hong Kong shows the model is working. Halfway through the year, figures showed a 59 per cent rise in listings on AirBNB in the preceding nine months. The figures also showed the other startling ways Hongkongers were using the service, such as a massive 80 listings attributed to a single account.

Beloved giant panda Jia Jia passes away
Hong Kong’s Ocean Park was home to the world’s oldest panda Jia Jia. She was a great-grandmother and a must-see for many park visitors. The panda, moved from Sichuan province to Hong Kong in 1999, was 38 when she died and entered the record books a year earlier as the world’s oldest panda in captivity.
