Close to 40 per cent of people polled in a survey said the government should give priority to protecting relics unearthed along the delayed Sha Tin to Central MTR link, but just under this number said they would not accept further delays to the project due to conservation.

A Kowloon City concern group questioned 152 people from a street booth in June. It found that 39 per cent of respondents agreed the relics unearthed so far were worth being given priority for protection. Only 24 per cent disagreed.

However, just over a third of those polled said it was unacceptable for the HK$80 billion rail link to be further delayed for the sake of conservation.

"If you ask me whether they think conservation is not important, I don't think so," Siu said.
