The proportion of Hongkongers who are dissatisfied with the city's development has climbed to 46 per cent, but 60 per cent consider they live a happy life, the latest poll by the University of Hong Kong's public opinion programme has found.
The annual survey was carried out by telephone from December 14 to 17, and found 46 per cent out of 1,019 respondents expressed dissatisfaction with Hong Kong's development. That is an increase of 11 percentage points over last year's results.
About 25 per cent are satisfied with the development of Hong Kong, a drop of eight percentage points from last year.
The survey showed respondents aged between 30 and 49 are most dissatisfied, while those aged between 18 and 29 are most pessimistic about the future.
But 60 per cent say they had lived a happy life in the past year.
An observer noted that "although people are not quite satisfied with Hong Kong's development … they are relatively optimistic about the future".
