More than 1,350 medical personnel have been deployed to Wuhan in the central province of Hubei and a further 1,000 would follow, according to Ma Xiaowei, director of the National Health Commission.

Other medical professionals involved in the 2002-03 fight against Sars – severe acute respiratory syndrome – have already been sent to the city to offer their expertise.

Medical units from Shanghai, Guangdong and the armed forces had already arrived in the province, the commission said on the weekend.

Financial support is also flowing in from celebrities, with Hong Kong actor Louis Koo Tin-lock reportedly donating 10 million yuan (US$1.4 million) to the Wuhan Charity Federation and mainland Chinese performers Wu Jing, Xie Nan, and Huang Xiaoming contributing 200,000 yuan each.

The contributions come as hospitals across Wuhan have been overwhelmed by the flood of patients, and doctors are becoming increasingly frustrated at the lack of support, both in terms of supplies and personnel, they have received.
