Donald Trump thanks Xi Jinping for efforts to contain deadly coronavirus
- US ‘greatly appreciates [China’s] efforts and transparency’, president says in a tweet, as woman in her 60s becomes America’s second confirmed case
- ‘It will all work out well’, Trump says, though state department official says Washington still has concerns about Beijing’s handling of the outbreak
“The United States greatly appreciates their efforts and transparency. It will all work out well. In particular, on behalf of the American People, I want to thank President Xi!” Trump said on Twitter.
“China has been working very hard to contain the Coronavirus,” he said.
The president’s comments came after US health officials reported that a woman in her 60s had been confirmed as contracting the virus.
According to Dr Allison Arwady, commissioner of the Chicago Department of Public Health, the woman had travelled to the Chinese city of Wuhan – where the outbreak began – in late December and returned to the US on January 13.
“The patient is clinically doing well, is in stable condition, and remains hospitalised primarily for infection control,” Arwady said.
