Secondary school pupils in northwestern China protested on Tuesday night last week after their celebrations ahead of the new year were abruptly cancelled by the principal.

It had been a tradition at Puji Secondary School in Wugong county, Shaanxi province, to allow each class to hold its own celebrations, and the students had bought snacks in anticipation, provincial newspaper Hua Shang Bao reported.

When teachers announced on short notice that this year’s celebrations would be scrapped, nearly 1,000 students crowded into the main school building, chanting the name of the school principal in anger.

Some might have set their books alight and tossed them to the ground floor from walkways above, the report said.

The uproar only lasted for about two minutes and was quickly nipped in the bud.
