The People’s Liberation Army has launched the first of its next generation of amphibious assault ships, the Type 076, featuring an electromagnetic catapult which will be useful in a range of operations, including in a conflict with Taiwan.

The Chinese warship’s unique design – including its ability to carry fighter jets and drones and not just helicopters – will increase the speed of amphibious landing missions and the intensity of its strikes, according to analysts. Some also believe it is likely to become the world’s first “drone carrier”.

The independently developed Sichuan, bearing the hull number 51, entered the water at a launch and naming ceremony in Shanghai at the Hudong-Zhonghua shipyard on Friday, according to state broadcaster CCTV.

The Sichuan will be “a key asset”, advancing naval transformation and enhancing the PLA Navy’s long-range operational capabilities, CCTV report said.

“If attack and reconnaissance drones … can be launched from the Type 076 via electromagnetic catapult, then this amphibious assault ship will transform into the world’s first drone aircraft carrier. This would significantly enhance its strike range and effectiveness,” military analyst Du Wenlong told CCTV.

The most notable feature is the innovative electromagnetic catapult and arresting technologies, allowing it to carry fixed-wing aircraft, helicopters, and amphibious equipment.
