China has tested a new type of ship-borne fighter jet on its aircraft carrier, state media reported on Friday.
The unidentified new fighter carried out take-off tests on the Liaoning, China’s first aircraft carrier, according to a documentary aired by state broadcaster CCTV.
In the documentary titled Quenching, Liaoning crew member Zhang Naigang recalls his experience conducting the first test flight of the J-15 “Flying Shark” 12 years ago – and now the new fighter jet.
While the documentary included footage of the J-15 taking off from the Liaoning, it did not show any image nor give any information about the new jet, not even when the tests were conducted.
Zhang, an operator of the aircraft take-off control group unit, was in charge of releasing fighter jets to the ski jump ramp and launching their take-offs. According to the documentary, Zhang was also responsible for the release of the first J-15 on Liaoning on November 23, 2012, a feat he said he would be proud of “for the rest of my life”.
“I’m close to the end of my service career, and the new fighter on board our ship looks so pretty. It was a sunny day [when we tested the new fighter jet] – just as good as the day when the J-15 had its first take-off flight,” Zhang was quoted as saying.
He said he was so excited that he could not help but start singing as “the new fighter turned on its engines and taxied to get ready for take-off”.
China is reportedly developing a new fighter jet called J-31 or J-35 for deployment on its aircraft carriers. It is to be used in mix-and-match formations with current air wings of J-15s, a fourth-generation fighter which formally entered service in 2013.

Touted as the Chinese equivalent of the F-35, the fifth-generation US fighter jet by Lockheed Martin, the new jet is believed to be a stealth fighter, China’s second fifth-generation fighter after the J-20.
The new model is likely to be a variant of an earlier prototype FC-31 that was developed by the Shenyang Aircraft Corporation, a medium-weight twin-jet fighter which had its first flight in 2012.
In April, photographs circulated online showed what was believed to be one of the new aircraft stationed on the deck of the Liaoning.
The documentary on Friday also included footage of a sea trial in May of China’s third and most advanced aircraft carrier – the Fujian. It showed its electromagnetic catapult system in a simulated launch situation, though not any actual launches of fighter jets.
Unlike the Kuznetsov-class carriers Liaoning and Shandong that use ski-jump take-off ramps, the Fujian – which is still undergoing sea trials – has a flat flight deck and is equipped with an electromagnetic catapult system that allows more frequent launches of fighter planes carrying more fuel and munitions.
