A comment by an employee in the publicity department of Shaanxi province's Feng county sparked controversy after praising a senior official punished for violating discipline because of his extravagant lifestyle.

China’s Central Commission for Discipline Inspection said earlier this week that Wang Chuanzhong, Feng county’s director on the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, had received a warning – a slight punishment within the Communist Party – for breaching party discipline.

He held a luxurious wedding for his son and had allegedly accepted cash gifts.

His case was among a total of more than 150 involving different officials from across the nation, which were dealt with between December 29 and January 4, the commission said.

After a media worker posted news of the commission’s report, a member of Feng county’s publicity department, responsible for maintaining its Weibo page, used its blog to write: “In my eyes, he’s a simple, practical man of integrity.”

Another department employee told the Legal Evening News that the colleague’s Weibo comment had not been contradictory.
