Relations between China and the United States will remain uneasy for the foreseeable future – because mistrust still exists between the world’s two major powers, state media said on Wednesday.
An editorial published in the Global Times said China and the US were still struggling to understand each other and accused Washington of backing the Hong Kong protests and encouraging an “anti-China mentality” in the region.
It added the two countries could not avoid friction because they both “insist on using their own means to maintain their national interests”.
”The mistrust between the major powers cannot be easily explained and eliminated, given their lack of experience in doing so,” it said.
The editorial came after President Xi Jinping and his US counterpart Barack Obama engage in further bilateral negotiations in Beijing following the conclusion of the Apec summit. Informal talks over dinner on Tuesday reportedly lasted five hours.
The editorial questioned the sincerity of the Obama’s remark about welcoming “the rise of a peaceful, prosperous and stable China”.
