Malaysian navy diver dies during salvage operations on wrecked naval vessel, inquiry launched
The diver is believed to have drowned while working at the wreck site off the coast of Johor
A Malaysian mine clearance diver died on Wednesday while carrying out salvage works on the wrecked navy vessel KD Pendekar.
In a statement shared by news agency Bernama, the Royal Malaysian Navy (TLDM) confirmed the death of Leading Seaman I Arman San Hermansa.
He had been working in waters off the coast of Johor.
A special board of inquiry has been formed to determine the cause of the incident, said TLDM.
The KD Pendekar sank on August 25, two nautical miles southeast of Tanjung Penyusop in Kota Tinggi.
All 39 crew members were rescued before the ship was completely submerged, with no injuries reported, the navy said in an earlier statement.
The ship was believed to have hit an unknown underwater object, causing a leak that resulted in “severe flooding”.
