Philippines’ Duterte orders investigation into SEA Games debacle

  • Reports of delays, confusion and insufficient meals for athletes, delegates and volunteers have gone viral on social media since last week

A slew of criticisms surrounding the Philippines’ hosting of the Southeast Asian Games has prompted President Rodrigo Duterte to order an investigation.

The Philippine Senate has separately announced its own inquiry into the debacle.

“The office of the president will also be conducting a separate probe on the aberrations and irregularities in the administration of our country’s hosting of the SEA Games immediately after the games,” presidential spokesman Salvador Panelo said in a statement.

He noted that while hosting a multi-sport event is “complex”, the organising committee “should perform better services expected of them”.

“An array of criticism has been made on how [the organising committee] has handled the logistics of this momentous event, and these should be accepted and considered in order to rectify the errors it has committed,” Panelo said in the statement.
