Shin Yong-hae, the commissioner general of the Korea Correctional Service, informed lawmakers that Kim’s suicide attempt took place at a detention centre in Seoul but was thwarted by staff.

“A control room staff member intervened, and when they opened the door, he immediately gave up the attempt,” Shin said. He added that Kim was now under close protection in a secure cell and is in stable condition.

Kim, who resigned last Thursday, was formally arrested late on Tuesday after a Seoul court issued a warrant against him. He faces charges of “engaging in critical duties during an insurrection” and “abuse of authority to obstruct the exercise of rights”.

Shin disclosed that the attempted suicide occurred shortly before midnight in the restroom of the Seoul Dongbu Detention Centre.

The Seoul Central District Court issued a statement on Wednesday confirming Kim’s arrest, citing concerns that evidence might be destroyed.
