Hong Kong needs more tech-savvy students
Technological developments may be rapidly changing our world – while becoming indispensable to future success in life. Despite this, however, Hong Kong students are not sufficiently tech-savvy, warns a recent research report on digital orientation among students and the digital divide in education.

The study, undertaken by the University of Hong Kong’s faculty of education research team, suggests that schools and parents should more readily take on the important role of teaching, guiding and supporting students in information and communications technology (ICT) usage to develop their digital skills and new media literacy.

ICT has blurred the boundary between traditional and informal learning, and students can learn even when playing online. However, although ICT has almost completely integrated into students’ everyday lives, its use does not necessarily improve students’ digital skills. Sophisticated ICT knowledge and skills are not prevalent, says the six-strong research team.
