Who is Caitlin Clark, the ‘future GOAT’ of women’s basketball? Iowa’s rising star is about to join the WNBA after breaking Steph Curry’s 3-point record – and was offered US$5 million to play by Ice Cube
- Big3, the 3-on-3 pro basketball league founded by rapper Ice Cube, made a ‘historic’ US$5 million offer to Caitlin Clark on X – but the point guard has already announced she’s joining the WNBA … on a salary of US$80,000
- Clark broke Steph Curry’s 3-point record in March, and she’s already estimated to be worth over US$3 million in sponsorship, with deals from Nike, Gatorade, State Farm and Goldman Sachs
Already touted as the greatest NCAA women’s basketball player in history, Caitlin Clark is set to shatter the three-point record in college basketball set by two-time NBA MVP Stephen Curry when he played with the Davidson Wildcats.
Clark has been offered a “historic” sports contract – but it wasn’t from the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA), where she is predicted to be first pick in the draft. Rather, it is from the rapper Ice Cube.
“Big3 made a historic offer to Caitlin Clark. Why wouldn’t we? Caitlin is a generational athlete who can achieve tremendous success in the Big3,” Ice Cube wrote on X (formerly Twitter) last week.
Clark’s record comes at a time when sports commentators and basketball fans question the value of the WNBA as it battles to stay afloat financially.
The WNBA is facing backlash from its players for the alleged pay discrepancy compared to their male counterparts in the NBA. Women’s MVP Kelsey Plum has called for the league to pay women players the same percentage of revenue shared as players in the NBA – yet the league operates at an annual loss of roughly US$10 million to US$12 million (per Sports Keeda).
Who is Caitlin Clark?
Clark plays for Iowa Hawkeyes and is currently the NCAA Division 1’s all-time leading scorer.
