A new year brings fresh opportunities for fame – and some of the most popular musicians in the world were born in the upcoming Year of the Dragon.

Like every other sign of the Chinese zodiac, the Year of the Dragon comes every 12 years. And this February heralds the Year of the Wood Dragon, which happens every 60 years. This powerful dragon is associated with good luck, strength and health.

So which famous pop stars were born in this auspicious year?

1. Rihanna: Earth Dragon

Born in Barbados on February 20, 1988, Robyn “Rihanna” Fenty emerged on the scene at 17 with her single “Pon de Replay”. The star went on to have multiple No 1 tracks on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart including “Rude Boy”, “Love the Way You Lie”, “Work” and “Umbrella”.

Umbrella” won Riri her first Grammy Award for best rap/sung collaboration in 2008. She has won eight more as well as hundreds of other music awards around the world in the decades that followed.

Rihanna has starred in films including Battleship, Annie and Ocean’s 8. She has her own line of clothing and a wildly successful cosmetics line, Fenty Beauty. Forbes estimates her fortune to be at around US$1.4 billion.

2. John Lennon: Gold Dragon

John Lennon was born in Liverpool, England on October 9, 1940. He co-founded The Beatles in 1960.

The group is widely considered to be one of the most culturally influential bands around the world ever. As a solo artist, Lennon became known for his single Imagine” and the anti-war anthem “Give Peace a Chance”. He won hundreds of awards around the world, including seven Grammys.

He was assassinated in New York, US, in 1980, when he was 40 years old. Despite his early death, Lennon’s music lives on through his songs and lyrics, and continued recognition of his work.
