How often do you come across a former world leader at a fashion event? Not very often at all. But Sanna Marin is changing that.

A few days ago, the ex-PM of Finland arrived at Paris Fashion Week 2023 to show her support for Victoria Beckham’s runway event in the capital of France, where she also took selfies with Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour, as reported by British media. The fashion icon delighted her followers - all one million of them on Instagram - with a series of pics from her Parisian trip, offering us a deeper glimpse into her impeccable style and extravagant post-office life.

It’s no surprise if this isn’t the first time you’ve come across Marin. The millennial was never your “typical” prime minister during her time in the Finnish office, and she continues to pique curiosity.

At 34, Marin became Finland’s third female prime minister in 2019, also becoming the world’s youngest sitting premier, as NPR reported. However, she lost her bid for re-election in April. She’s since joined a fellow former PM, Britain’s Tony Blair, at London-based think-tank Institute for Global Change, per British media.

Here’s what else she’s been up to since leaving office …

During her time as Finland’s prime minister, Marin was praised for her cabinet’s management of the Covid-19 pandemic and was considered one of the leading voices in supporting Ukraine since the war began, per AP. She was also in office when her country joined Nato in April and stood up to sexism, quickly becoming considered an icon for female representation.

Marin declared that she would be leaving politics in September, after losing to Finland’s main conservative party in a three-way race, states the same source.

Having a “proper summer vacation” and partying

It seems that Helsinki-born Marin is enjoying the good life. The 37-year-old has been sharing snippets of her time outside office, from attending Finland’s Flow Festival to fashion shows.

In one caption, she shared: “I’ve had a proper summer vacation for the first time in a while. It has included, among other things, being busy with Emma [her daughter], sports, friends, good food and unforgettable trips.”

Marin, who once went viral for her infamous clip of her partying with friends, enjoys letting her hair down, like most of us do. “I danced, sang and partied - perfectly legal things,” she said in response to the video leaked in 2022.

She’s a natural fashion icon

Marin has always been considered a fashionable politician. But she’s a natural style maven even outside of office.

Her wardrobe typically consists of all-black outfits with flattering silhouettes. Although she champions quiet luxury, she also donned some Barbiecore this summer.

She’s in an HBO documentary

Launched in June, First Five is a three-part documentary series that offers a deep-dive into the life of Marin and her female cabinet members in the Finnish office. The show was HBO’s first Finnish documentary series, states Variety. Sarin promoted the series on her Instagram, sharing that, “It was an interesting experience to be part of the HBO Max documentary.”

Single and ready to mingle?

In May, Marin announced her divorce from her husband of three years, Markus Raikkonen, on Instagram. Both Marin and Raikkonen stated in separate Instagram Stories that it was a mutual decision: “We are grateful for the 19 years together and our beloved daughter. We will remain best friends.”

While there have been media speculations about both exes being seen at nightclubs with other potential romances in the lead-up to the split, there’s no way to know for sure – and for now, it seems Marin is focusing on embracing the single life and all the perks of it.
