'The mistakes each of us made': Why K-drama's Song-Song couple, Song Joong-ki and Song Hye-kyo, are getting a divorce
Glamorous couple, whose on-screen chemistry in TV drama, Descendants of the Sun, sparked huge public interest, reveal split 20 months after their October 2017 wedding
South Korean actor Song Joong-ki and his wife, actress Song Hye-kyo both issued statements on Thursday about their plans to seek a divorce only 20 months after they were married.
The so-called “Song-Song” couple, who share the same surname, enjoyed huge popularity as South Korea’s “golden couple” after they became an item while working on the set of the hit 2016 drama television series, Descendants of the Sun, and following their subsequent marriage, in October 2017.
However, rumours about the state of their marriage had been swirling for several months before the official announcements were made public on Thursday.
Song Joong-ki, 33, who issued his official statement through his lawyer, said: “For all those who love and care for me, actor Song Joong-ki, I truly apologise for causing a disruption with such news.
“I have decided to pursue a divorce suit against Ms Song Hye-kyo and decided not to go in depth about the mistakes each of us made.
“I apologise for the absence of personal reasons behind the divorce and hope I will be able to recover soon from the pain to show you all a good performance as an actor [in future].”
